Ballad and Dance for brass quintet is built with two contrasting sections. The ballad bookends the piece, beginning with a plaintive melody on muted trumpet. The melody is stated again in a different key more fully before leading up to the dance section. A faster tempo and engaging rhythm drive the dance section. It ebbs and flows with the melody employed across multiple parts. There are a few moments of repose where the dance relaxes somewhat. After some more key changes, the dance ends and the ballad returns with a final statement. For 2 B-flat trumpets, F horn, trombone, and tuba. Duration: Approx. 6 minutes, 15 seconds.
